Friday Photo Spots & Rain Delay

Welcome to Friday Photo Spots. This post is part of a weekly series, Friday Photo Spots, which showcases some of the best photos of the week from around the photo blog community. I did my best to add a little categorization this week, but this feature is still a work in progress. Be sure to leave any feedback or suggestions you might have in the comments and be sure to subscribe via RSS or email so you don’t miss any future posts!

Urban Exploration

  • Tobias George has a great UrbEx image going on this week featuring lots of contrasts of shapes, colors and textures.
  • Michael Murphy is a UK photographer that takes UrbEx to a whole new level. This is a must see if you haven’t checked out his site yet.
  • Mike Criswell aka Theatrewiz shows off some Steeler pride this week. I can’t say much for his taste in football teams( ;) ), but these two images here and here are great!
  • Scott Frederick always has school in session when it comes to UrbEx. If you’re looking for some great examples of UrbEx photography with some awesome street art and graffiti, you should definitely check out Scott’s Site
  • Animals and Wildlife

  • Barbara Youngleson has the most featured the most awesome photo of a lion I’ve seen in a long time. She took this shot when she was in South Africa and it’s definitely a must see!
  • Kristi Hines aka, my wife, posted this image of some ducklings on her blog that are apparently “cute.” Note: I do not under normal circumstances condone the use of the word “cute,” but the photos are definitely worth a visit. Personally, I think of the title of the post as “What the Duck?”. Check it out, there’s even a video!
  • Portraits

  • Jim Nix posted a great picture of one of those funny english guard dudes with the hats (yes I know they’re called the Queen’s Guards). If they have to stay perfectly still, I wonder if I could pose Captain Jack Sock on his shoulder for a photo?
  • Mark Garbowski featured this happy looking gentleman in his post this week. I have to say that this one made me laugh :) .
  • Textures

  • Pete Talke has an awesome baseball shot using some great textures. If you’re a fan of textures in photography you should definitely give this a look.
  • Heath O’Fee – speaking of textures, Heath has been doing some experimenting this week. If you haven’t caught this one already you should definitely give it a look.
  • Buildings

  • Chris Kenison has so many great shots on his site it was hard to choose. I decided to share with you his photo of this cool looking barn. Check it out!
  • Keith Moyer posted a photo of this beautiful church. I’m not sure where this was taken, all I know is that it’s from a tiny town.
  • Miscellaneous

  • Mike Olbinski, Ryan Young, Scott Wood and Chris Frailey share the “photography from awesome places I want to visit” award this week with their pictures from The Grand Falls in Arizona. Although now that I think about it, I might have been here sometime around the age of 5… I remember throwing rocks into water that looked like this. Hmm, I’ll have to check with my dad on this one. Anyway, It’s really cool to see the differences in lighting and processing on each of their shots – check them out!

And Finally…

  • Jesse Pafundi gets the sunset photo of the week award with this 8 minute exposure! I thought of making a list of things that don’t last 8 minutes but I can see that going horrible wrong…

I took this shot last weekend during our one day thunderstorm which turned the whether wacky. I went to this baseball park hoping the clouds would break open for sunset but no so luck. Instead, I settled on this one which I thought had a nice feel to it. It reminds me of my baseball days. Let me know what you think and don’t forget to check back this weekend for Sock Monkey Sundays !

Rain Delay

Once again, I want to thank you everyone for supporting my blog. I hope that you found these bloggers and their photos interesting. I did my best this week to include a few more photographers as well as adding some categorization. Any feedback and suggestions you have would be very welcome.

Would you like to be featured in Friday Photo Spot posts?

The photos featured about come primary from people I interact with through comments as well Twitter and Facebook. I very much enjoy checking out the work of fellow photographers and I would love to list you in a future post. Thanks!

Lines

I took this shot down a side street from the one I posted yesterday. It was a limited access road and there was no traffic so I just stopped in the middle of the road, climbed in the bed of my truck and set up my tripod. I like having a truck for photos like this because I can get a little extra height on the shot when I need it. When I opened this photo I instantly thought about the old Tesla song “Signs” except in my head it went “Lines, lines, everywhere lines…” I then spent the next hour listening to various hair metal bands :) .

I processed this one a lot differently then I usually do. I wasn’t really happy with any of the tonemapped versions either bracketed or single, so I ended up converting the overexposed version to b&w and processing it in Lightroom without tonemapping. I have to say, I am really happy with how it turned out – I really enjoy grainy feel that I used on this one and I love the contrast of the black power lines with the blown out sky. I’d like to hear your feedback so tell me what you think!

The Road

Happy hump day everyone! :) It’s been a busy and great week here so far. Thank you to everyone who has left comments, feedback, and who has tweeted my posts – I really appreciate it!

This is one of the images that I “rescued” from my failed memory card. I used the software at cardrecovery.com which seems worked out very well for me. I ran out after work and tried a couple places for sunset and eventually settled on this area. I thought the power lines added some interest in this photo. Tell me what you think!

Scottsdale Sunset

If there is one thing that I love to photograph it’s sunsets. I live in the city and don’t always get the opportunity to get outside the limits and find some nice vantage points because I often work late. I skipped out early last week and made it to a local park to take several shots. It wasn’t the most interesting scene, and the sunset wasn’t a particularly good one, but I found myself playing around with some light flares and sun spots. I decided to process this one with a sepia look which is something that is pretty new to me. I absolutely love how it came out and I plan to play around with some more black and white imagery in the future. For now, enjoy and let me know what you think of the processing!
