Dam It!
Have you been to the Hoover Dam? There are really a lot of interesting things there to shoot. I’m not big into tours but I have heard that the Hoover Dam Tours are pretty interesting as well. If you are making the drive between Arizona and Nevada I definitely suggest taking a bit of time to shoot there. This particular image was taken from the new bypass bridge which was recently completed. I used a 28-300 here to get this shot.

Hoover Dam
I usually spend a good deal of time planning my photo trips. I research locations, vantage points, weather, different lighting conditions and sun trajectories to make sure I’m in the right spot at the right time. I of course leave a considerable amount of time for wandering around and shooting what I see but I have found that I have gotten many more quality shots by spending a little more time planning. I knew I wanted to get this shot of the Hoover Dam during blue hour and I was able to pick a perfectly clear evening that didn’t disappoint.
For the processing on this image, I did something a bit different and decided not to use use Photomatix (or any tone mapping for that matter). I used Photoshop to manually layer the 5 exposures and mask in the parts of the image that I wanted. I was very pleased with the result – what do you think?
