And Finally
- This week’s sunset photo of the week award goes to Keith Moyer for this incredible image entitled Farm and Fire Sky. This is an absolutely stunning sunset here!
Square Cropping
I’m writing this post after a 14 hour work day so hopefully my writing will still make sense. I have found myself playing around with square crops of some of my images lately. I have found that it can be a really powerful tool if used correctly. I’m interested in your opinions – what do you think of images with a square crop? And by the way, this image was taken with a Nikon 18-200. If you’re looking for a great all purpose DX lens that’s as sharp as a bee’s ass – this is the lens for you!
Would you like to be part featured in Friday Photo Spots?
The photos featured about come primary from people I interact with through comments as well Twitter and Facebook. I very much enjoy checking out the work of fellow photographers and I would love to list you in a future post. Thanks!
Monument Valley
Happy Monday Everyone!
I thought I’d bring you something a bit different with today’s image from Monument Valley. I stumbled across a Photoshop plug-in called Pixel Bender and I’ve been playing around with the Oil Painting feature. It’s a pretty interesting effect – I kinda like the painting feel with some images, especially ones with some nice grass in the foreground. I recommend checking it out – it’s definitely worth the free download.

Caught in the Rain
Thank you to everyone for all the great comments yesterday!
Back in April we spent the afternoon shooting in Monument Valley. The day had been rather unpredictable with brief periods of sunshine bracketed by isolated thunderstorms. By the time the late afternoon rolled around the sky had turned a dull grey color and the wind had begun to blow pretty hard. My hopes for a good sunset were not high but I decided to stick it out. We had been going since four in the morning and since sunset was still almost 3 hours away, I decided to park the truck and take a bit of a power nap.
I jerked awake after about 40 minutes of sleep to see a wall of rain headed towards the monuments. I quickly grabbed my gear, zipped my jacket and sprinted out of the truck to the spot I had picked up earlier. I barely had time to setup my tripod and grab a coupled quick brackets before the storm was upon me. I was drenched in a matter of seconds but I did manage to grab this shot right before the rain got to me.

The Yellow Line
So many good things are happening here all at once! We’re finally getting some clouds in which are provide for some more interesting sunsets, the monsoons are starting to look promising, and I’m leaving for Page on Saturday morning. To celebrate all these wonderful things, I am cutting back my hours at my job starting next week to allow myself more time to get out and shoot in the afternoon. All I’ve got to say is that the next few months are going to be awesome!

Into the Storm
Woo! Made it past the hump of the week! Yesterday was a very long 12 hour work day for me, so please forgive the lack of comments and tweets from my direction. I’m looking forward to the weekend and even more to having a 4 day weekend for 4th of July – we’re just deciding where we want to go. What about you guys – what plans do you have for the 4th of July?
Today’s image comes from Monument Valley. We stopped on the north side of the Monuments to take a few shots and while we were there a storm starting rolling in. We managed to time our shooting perfectly and we got back to the truck just as it started hailing. This is one of the shots I grabbed of the storm rolling in. Leave a comment and tell me what you think!
