Subterranean

I decided to post four different shots of the Subway section today. Being in a fairly small setting like this, it’s hard to get a lot of dramatically different compositions but I did my best to capture of a few different perspectives. Be sure to leave a comment and let me know which is your favorite!

The Golden Moment

I had a great day hiking the Subway yesterday. The weather was perfect, the scenery outstanding and I felt totally at peace. If you’ve never done the Subway before, it can be quite a challenging hike. Overall, the totally hike is 8 miles of climbing over boulders, crossing the creek and wading through cold water. It’s not an easy hike, but it’s definitely worth it!

It’s easy in a place like this to focus on the larger picture and neglect the little details like this. I noticed that every few minutes a leaf would break away and float past this small cascade so I composed my shot and I waited. In this case, I definitely feel like my patience was rewarded!

Kanarra Falls

The past month has been crazy for me! Finding a house, packing, loading, moving, unloading, assembling baby furniture… The list goes on. It’s been a great time but very busy. We are finally settled in our rental house here in Cedar City and we’re loving it so far. I can’t believe that Kristi’s due date is just eight weeks away now! Where has the time gone? In the mean time, I will be exploring this beautiful area of Utah.

Yesterday I made my way to the little town of Kanarraville 20 minutes south of here to photograph this beautiful little slot canyon. Although the fall colors at this altitude are long gone, the canyon itself did not disappoint and lots of little water falls and plenty of (cold) water. I am hoping to make my way up to Cedar Breaks tomorrow evening for sunset before heading off to hike the Subway in Zion on Tuesday. It’s going to be a great week – stay tuned! :)

‘Round The Corner

Hi everyone!

Just a quick post for today as I got back in town late last night. I had a blast in Yosemite. The weather was great and I came back with some images that I’m very happy with and I can’t wait to share them with you!

Today’s image is from a little slot in Southern Utah called Red Canyon. While not particularly spectacular, the colors and textures are quite appealing and I enjoyed spending quite a bit of time photographing here. This is one of those images that looks great in both color and black & white. Personally, I favor the black & white version a little more as I feel it brings out the lines and textures more. What do you think?

The Big Empty

The first time I took the drive down Hole in the Rock Road in Escalante I felt quite bemused. I had seen many incredible images from this area, heard stories of it’s beauty and as I’m driving down this road this is the sight I see on my left. Oddly enough, my wife had the same sensation when I took her down the same road a couple months later.

The beauty of Escalante is in it’s mysterious. By exploring this area you can see some truly beautiful and unique sights that you won’t find anywhere else and I have to say that this is one my favorite places to explore. It just goes to show you that you can’t judge a book by it’s cover. :)
